Before and After: Pretty Updates and Smart Storage in Our Foyer | Thrifty Decor Chick

Our foyer is the latest room on my “let’s add some character and finish up DIY details” journey through our house this year.

Some of the updates in this area took me out of my comfort zone, but I’m so glad I tackled them. Let’s take a look at how this room started and then I’ll share my latest projects and the after pics.

I’ve always loved that our entryway is its own dedicated space. It’s especially spacious because of the little alcove off of this area with doorways to other rooms in our home.

When we moved in, I copy and pasted the exact decor and furniture we had in our first home:

Before I share the latest pretty updates, I wanted to show you the simple changes I made to our coat closet in this space.

We needed more space for winter boots and bulky shoes, so I repeated an easy DIY that I did in our last house. I screwed scrap wood into the wall on the sides and back, and then placed a long board on top to make a shelf for shoes:

As you can see, I ended up installing a vertical board in the middle for added support. Now we have two levels of shoe storage, and the new wood shelf keeps wet boots off of the hardwood floors.

I’ve mentioned before how much I loathe the wire shelving in our closets. HATE!

I contemplated ripping the wire shelf out of our coat closet, but knew I’d have to deal with replacing the rod as well. So I used another board (both this and the boot shelf were 12 inches deep) and simply laid it across the top of the wire:

I ended up nailing in very small trim (into studs in the wall) around the top of the board to keep it from moving around or popping up, and then installed a thin piece of trim along the front. I was careful to only cover the front of the wire shelving, so it wouldn’t interfere with hanging up our coats and jackets.

After a couple of coats of the same Cyberspace paint as the doors and trim, it was complete! Now the beach towels/blankets don’t fall through the wire shelf, and everything slides on and off easily:

Game changer!

Those coat closet upgrades only cost me about $6, for the price of the trim along the front of the new upper shelf. I had the wood boards and other trim in the garage for the rest.

We keep our winter supplies like hats and gloves in our mud room cubbies.

OK, onto the pretty stuff!

This is one of my all time favorites upgrades — it’s dramatic but beautiful, and adds so much character to our entryway. It makes a huge impact, (friends comment on it immediately when they walk in) but also feels soft and serene.

I kept the decor on the vintage dresser very simple, as to not compete with the mural:

There’s not a prettier wall in our whole house! I love this view!:

The applied trim molding around the mural and on the sides adds some beautiful detail as well:

We always had a mirror on that wall, but it felt wrong to cover the pretty wallpaper with it. A few of you suggested hanging a mirror across room so I could still check my face and it would reflect the mural. Such a great idea!

I found this pretty wood framed mirror on Facebook Marketplace (shocker):

You can see a peek of the dark blue trim in our little alcove in that photo — I tackled that part of the space next.

dark blue doors and trim

It’s SO hard to get a good pic of this spot!

I painted the doors and trim in that pretty blue and I really love how it turned out. Here’s a view with the light turned on:

Oh, and I can’t forget that I painted the ceilings blue as well! (Can you tell how much I love that color?) I matched the soft blues in the wallpaper mural:

That bubble chandelier light was an addition last year — it is SO pretty in person! I plan to hang a bigger version above our bathroom tub. 😍

The DIY plaque above the door has our name on it, but I cover it for photos. 🙂 That custom DIY air intake vent cover (on the left) is one my favorite projects in this space as well.

I’m so thrilled with the updates I’ve made in this room! It’s so full of color, and I did my best to make the most of a smaller space:

I hope you enjoyed the little tour! We love welcoming friends and family into this space. If I missed any details, please let me know.

Can you guess what room I’m working on next? 🙂
